Detoxification is also much easier at local rehab centers where the recovering addict is provided medications to assist in the reduction of the severity of their withdrawal symptoms and also prevent relapse. They also have access to emergency medical treatment for any addiction symptoms or side effects if necessary.

For a person addicted to drugs or alcohol, entering a treatment program at a local rehab center is the first step towards recovery. A recovery program will be developed that is specific to the person’s circumstance and the best for their eventual recovery. In addition, there are many types of social support and counseling which are provided and have been very effective at helping the recovering addict through the many different challenges of recovery from drug addiction. By remaining in a local rehab program the family and friends of the recovering addict may be able to attend some counseling sessions with the patient to ease their transition into each phase of the program. For some patients this is a very important part of the process and plays a key role in their recovery.
