Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation

For the addict, the alcohol and drug addiction started from experimentation. Experimentation led to bad habits, and bad habits quickly turned to full blown addiction. The peril of addiction is how fast it can overtake the sufferer in many subtle, unnoticed ways. Some things, like alcohol, are perfectly fine in moderation; but for the more addict-prone personality, even that might be something to shy away from.

Symptoms

Here are some various symptoms a drug or alcohol addict may have:

  • Difficulty holding down a job
  • Physical dependence to substance
  • Mental dependence to substance
  • Problems with keeping, spending, and saving money
  • Trouble with the law
  • Dulling of conscience
  • Loss of friends
  • Physical violence
  • Verbal abuse
  • Frequent drunk driving
  • Frequent failed attempts to quit
  • Dishonestly/Pathological lying habits
  • Withdrawal symptoms when no access to substance

Causes

What truly makes an addict an addict varies based on different variables/circumstances. Many times those who are considered addicts are not even aware of the severity of their problem until they are deep in the throes of it. Many of the people who turn to substance seem to have suffered emotional pain in their past, yet have not yet resorted to healthy coping mechanisms, like talking out their issues with a counselor, friend, or family member. Many have found life to be hopeless and meaningless; yet, instead of looking deep within themselves to see their true worth and purpose, fill themselves with self hatred and turn to substance to dull the pain.

Effects

Addiction can lead to many “collateral” effects as it harms self, friends, and family. The damage an addict causes to himself can be equal if not greater than the suffering of those who hold him or her dear. It affects their physical health greatly, and can make them age faster due to the mental and physical toll addiction plays on their being. Alcohol addiction in particular can be taxing on the liver, and lead to various health problems now and later on in life. Harder drug addiction like meth or heroine can make one look “strung-out” as the substance begins to truly damage mind and body.

Addiction has caused many to get in serious trouble with the law, and have up until this point been very fortunate to have not gone deep enough into their addiction to land them in jail for a long period of time. Often times it’s better to help get sooner than later, as for many, there may very well be a “point of no return”.
