Ask these 10 Questions Before Entering a Treatment Program

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, there are a variety of treatment options available. Which one you choose is an extremely difficult and important choice. You should ask some questions before you choose a program to make sure that the program is right for you.

1. Do I want Inpatient or Outpatient Care?

The first question is one for you to ask yourself. Inpatient care is residential treatment while outpatient care is nonresidential. One you stay at the clinic and the other you go to the clinic periodically for visits.

2. What Kind of Care Does the Facility Specialize in if Any?

Once you are considering a facility, it is important to ask about their specialty. Some facilities have them while others do not. If you have a single addiction, you might want to chose the facility that specializes in your addiction.

3. Does the Facility have an On Staff Physician?

A staff physician is extremely important particularly if your addiction has a medical component or in the event that you need medical treatment during your recovery.

4. What are the Staff’s Qualifications?

Entering a Treatment Program

A facility should provide individual treatment plans, tailored to each person’s specific needs.

Some less reputable rehab centers hire staff that is not qualified. Most of the more reputable ones are willing and able to show you their staff qualifications. They should have degrees and certifications in addiction counseling and other specialties.

5. What Types of Therapy do you Offer?

Most treatment centers offer individual and group counseling. Some of them offer other forms as well such as art therapy, pet therapy, and aquatic therapy. If you have a particular therapy that might work for you, make sure the facility offers it.

6. Is the Treatment Coordinated by Someone?

It is best to have a care coordinator that helps provide services. This way one person keeps track of all of the services that you are receiving. This way you receive all of the treatment services that you want and need.

7. Does the Facility Offer Individual Treatment Plans?

Individual treatment plans are extremely effective for treatment. Every individual is different just as every addiction is different. An individualized treatment plan helps to satisfy these differences. Your treatment should be tailored just for you and not a generic program for just anyone.

8. Does the Facility Offer Aftercare Programs?

Aftercare is extremely important when it comes to treatment. Treatment should not end just because you finished the program. Counseling and other types of aftercare resources should be available through your treatment facility.
