Paying for Rehab

The cost of drug or alcohol treatment can be overwhelming and downright impossible to fathom in some cases. Paying for rehab is one of the primary reasons that many choose not to even seek help. Most think they can’t afford it, that it’s not possible to get help on their income or budget and that the mere idea of paying for rehab is out of the question. However, quality treatment at an affordable price is available—you just have to know where to look and what options are available to assist you in the payment process.

Addiction to drugs or alcohol is a costly problem and treatment is also costly. While there are some “free” treatment options, finding a rehab center that is completely free is a challenge at best. Consider all the ways that you gather money for the use of drugs or alcohol-you might work, you may take part in illegal activities, you may borrow money from friends and family, you may sell your belongings, you may take out loans. Many of these same efforts (aside from illegal activity) can be performed to obtain money for treatment too.

What does Rehab Cost?

The actual cost of rehab can be covered very extensively, but that’s for another time. What you need to know is that addiction treatment costs vary significantly based on needs, the type of treatment chosen, the length of a treatment program, the location of the program, and individual factors such as amenities and the patient’s unique circumstances. On the low end, treatment programs can cost a few thousand dollars a month and on the high end, programs can cost in excess of a few thousand dollars a day. Don’t let these costs scare you away from getting the help you need! There are options to make treatment affordable for all budgets.

Special Financing

Many rehab centers will finance treatment out over a long term to allow you time to pay. If you’re worried about how you will immediate cover the repayment if you have treatment financed, consider asking friends or family to make the initial financing payments while you are in treatment and then as you heal and get well you can begin to make those payments on your own. Much like you would finance a car, you can finance your recovery –however the benefits of recovery last much longer than those associated with a new car!

Private Financing Programs

Paying for Rehab

Rehab can be expensive, depending on where you go, but there are various payment options available.

If the rehab center that you choose doesn’t offer its own financing, consider a private financing program. A personal loan or a loan for your bank can be used to help pay for your treatment. Again, if you’re worried about the additional payments that come with financing your recovery, consider asking your friends or family members to help you with these costs early on so that you can get well—and offer to pay the loved ones back when you’re out of treatment and have your life back on track.

Government Funding

Some rehab programs are funded by government programs and are therefore more affordable than others. Furthermore, if you have Medicaid or medicare, you may be able to receive treatment for addiction that is paid for by the government/state backed health coverage that you currently have. Certain court programs will also enforce treatment and, if you are court ordered into a program, the treatment that you receive is sometimes paid for using state funds. If you’re the spouse or loved one of an addict, consider a court order for treatment that will subsequently cover the costs of the care that your loved one needs to get well.

Health Insurance

Obamacare has resulted in millions more people holding health insurance than before. Almost all health insurance plans now have some coverage for addiction treatment. Many cover medical detox, the medications required during detox and treatment and inpatient as well as outpatient care. If you have health insurance, consider a call to your insurance company to find out what addiction treatment services are covered. If you don’t have health insurance, consider your options to obtain health coverage that will assist you in paying for your addiction treatment.

If you are considering health insurance coverage to defray the overall cost of rehab, be prepared to choose a treatment program that is within your provider network. Additionally, you must also be prepared to cover costs associated with co-pays, out of pocket expenses and other patient related expenses that are not covered by your insurance.

Furthermore, most insurance companies will require that you first attempt outpatient treatment before being admitted to and having your treatment costs covered for inpatient care. If you’re heavily addicted, you may be able to receive a referral that will help you to get into an inpatient program immediately without having to take the time for outpatient treatment first.
