According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, rehab centers are one of the more effective forms of drug addiction treatment. Unfortunately, there are a number of myths that movies, television, and popular media have perpetrated against rehab centers. People tend to believe these myths and many of them hurt the reputation of rehab centers in general. Some of them can even cause a person not to use a rehab center for drug or alcohol addiction treatment.
1. Rehab Centers are only for Rich People
Most rehab centers try their best to make patients comfortable and are nothing like being in jail.
Most rehab centers are quite cost effective when you compare them to the cost of drug addiction. Many of them offer free, sliding scale, reduce cost, or insurance based services to help defray the cost of treatment and medications.
2. Rehab Makes you Stop Cold Turkey without Medical Help
Stopping a drug cold turkey or without any help is not only not effective it can also be dangerous depending on the drug. Most addiction treatment centers use some form of medication or medical management in order to help with withdrawal.
3. Rehab has to be Voluntary
Rehab does not have to be voluntary. As a matter of fact there are many court ordered rehabs that are just as effective as those that are voluntary. This is why interventions and other forms of coerced rehab work.
4. Relapse is Failure
Relapse is a setback not a failure. Most people will relapse at least once before they completely conquer the addiction. The relapse rate for addiction is no different than many of the other diseases that relapse occurs.
Most rehab is nothing like jail, unless it is a locked rehab. Most rehab centers do their best to make sure that each person is as comfortable as they can be while going through withdrawal.
7. You have to be at Rock Bottom to Seek Treatment
You can seek treatment at any point during your addiction. Some people believe that treatment only works when you are at the very end of your rope. This is not true. Most people recover better and easier when they are new to the addiction.
8. Only One type of Treatment or Rehab Works
There are many types of rehab. If one does not work for you, it is recommended that you try another. Not every person is the same when it comes to addiction treatment.
Most rehab centers are in calm and quiet settings. They are purposely built in beautiful areas that are both peaceful and pleasing. The interiors are generally homey and filled with comfortable furniture and amenities.
10. Treatment Stops when you leave a Rehab Center
Treatment does not stop until your addiction ends. Most people realize this during treatment. Counseling often continues well after you leave the rehab center. In counseling, you work on what caused the addiction in the first place.
