National Institute of Health not Committed to Combining Forces
National Institute of Health can help you overcome your addiction!
Recently, the National Institute of Health announced that it will not pursue the proposed development of a single entity or institute that is devoted solely to addiction and substance abuse. This decision has many believing that the NIH is just not committed to making change and to stopping addiction in its tracks and this worries many health care and treatment professionals across the country. Currently, there are two major institutes that handle substance abuse and alcohol abuse situations; the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). The proposal would have combined these two institutes and placed more emphasis on addiction control and reform.
Instead of dissolving the two institutes, the NIH has decided to integrate them together and to utilize research and funds for both. For proponents of this action, there is a feel that the amount of time and resources that would be taken up to reorganize the two entities into one are unwarranted based on the level of benefit that would come. Opponents feel that the decision has lacked appeal and will reduce the effectiveness of these entities.
Help for those Who are Suffering
While the NIH claims that their decision was based on the idea that they do not want the public to perceive alcohol addiction and drug addiction together as one, many believe that the decision to keep each separate will reduce the overall effectiveness of the research that each institute performs. Fortunately, the NIH is committed to integrating the institutes together to share research and findings in a way that will benefit the public.
