Take advantage of programs after drug rehab to stay sober for life.
So you’ve completed drug rehab—now what? Staying sober after drug rehab is not always as easy as you may think it will be. Sometimes it can be difficult to stay on track when you aren’t in a drug rehab center where everything revolves around recovery. So, when life goes back to normal and you’re on your own in many more ways, how do you stay sober?
First, make sure that you stay honest with yourself. Have you ever talked with someone and realized that they have told so many lies that they now seem to believe the lies they are telling? Don’t lie to yourself about your addiction! After drug rehab, stay honest with yourself about what’s happening and if you feel like maybe you need a shoulder to lean on or someone to talk to, consider contacting your drug rehab counselor, speaking with a sponsor or attending an outpatient therapy session to get some added support.
Staying in touch with your support system can further work to prevent upset post drug rehab. When you are in drug rehab, everything revolves around staying sober and getting the support that you need. After you complete drug rehab you are free to explore the world, get back to work, spend time with your friends and family and do what you wish. Unfortunately, this can make staying sober difficult to do but if you stay connected with the support system that you have (your family, your counselor, your aftercare monitor and your group) then you will have a backbone even post drug rehab.
Don’t forget where you came from! Remember what being addicted to drugs was like. Remember how much you wanted to be sober and keep that thought in mind. This is not to say that you should dwell on the past but that you should not forget. History repeats itself but if you are familiar with your past and you keep those thoughts close then you’ll have a better chance at staying sober post drug rehab.
Don’t be too hard on yourself if you do relapse. Being honest with yourself, make sure that you stay true and don’t lie. If you relapse, make every effort to pick up where you left off with your sobriety and get back on track. Immediately contact your drug rehab counselor and make plans for some additional counselling and therapy to assure you are on the right path once again. Remember, relapse happens to almost every addict at least a few times so don’t give up!
