Why is It Important to Attend Professional Rehab?

Many people believe they can get over their addictions on their own and without the help of professional rehab. Unfortunately, though, this option is often much more dangerous and usually more unsuccessful than attending professional care in the hands of healthcare workers.

Addiction Changes the Brain

Most people cannot beat addiction through sheer force of will. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “The path to drug addiction begins with the voluntary act of taking drugs. But over time, a person’s ability to choose not to do so becomes compromised.” This is because the process of addiction causes changes to the brain’s functions, making abuse compulsive and uncontrollable. “Addiction [also] affects parts of the brain involved in reward and motivation, learning and memory, and control over behavior.”

A person will often require professional treatment in order to stop abusing drugs once they are addicted to them because of these extreme changes made to the brain’s functions. It cannot be overcome just by saying you will not abuse drugs anymore because your ability to control your own actions has been compromised. With medication and therapy, these changes can be reversed, giving addicts a better chance at recovery.

Addiction Recovery Isn’t Simple

Professional Rehab

Attending rehab reduces the risk of relapse, and makes experiencing a relapse less dangerous.

Even with treatment, addiction recovery isn’t simple, and relapse is still a strong possibility. It is common for someone to experience relapse during their recovery whether they attend professional treatment or not, but with this kind of help, it can be less likely and, often, less dangerous.

As stated by the NIDA, “Like other chronic diseases, addiction can be managed successfully. Treatment enables people to counteract addiction’s powerful disruptive effects on the brain and behavior and to regain control of their lives.” However, many people need to attend more than one professional treatment program over the course of their lives in order to stay strong in their recovery. Without this kind of long-term management, individuals often believe themselves to be cured of their addiction, which can be a damaging attitude and possibly lead to relapse.

Addiction Recovery Can Be Dangerous

In addition to a person requiring the kind of professional treatment available to addicts in order to have a strong recovery, the process of quitting drug abuse can sometimes be dangerous. Withdrawal from many substances, such as alcohol, CNS depressants, and others, can be extremely dangerous and even deadly under certain circumstances, and without the proper treatment, a person may not be able to realize when they are in serious trouble. Professional care can manage these symptoms and prevent relapse during withdrawal, which also occurs when symptoms are severe.
