Why do Many People Need Rehab Centers to Break the Cycle of Addiction?

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, addiction is an extremely complex illness that millions of people struggle with every year. Like many illnesses such as depression, addiction ends to trap you into a never ending cycle. If this cycle is not broken by something drastic then it will just continue until you as an addict eventually self-destruct. Sometimes breaking the cycle is as simple as changing an environmental factor while others it can an extremely complex issue.

What is the Addiction Cycle?

addiction cycle

Rehab centers help you avoid the triggers and enablers that tempt you to use substances.

There are extremely complex versions of the addiction cycle that theorist and psychologists have come up with over the years of study. Unfortunately, many of these are no very understandable and are impractical when you are looking at the basics of trying to break this cycle. The steps of the cycle are:

  1. You use the drug, be it for the first time or the 100th.
  2. It makes you feel really really good so you continue to use it to solve various problems including depression and problems with energy.
  3. As you use the drug, it takes more and more of the drug to achieve the same result. This is called tolerance.
  4. Your start spending all of your time, money, and effort on getting the drug, this causes family, financial, and other forms of neglect.
  5. You reacquire the drug and use the drug again and the cycle begins again.

This is a simplified version of what happens to most drug users, as they become addict. This cycle is endless even in its simplified version. Like anything that is cyclic it can be extremely difficult to break the cycle on your own.

What are Triggers?

Another reason people need rehab centers is due to the presence of triggers in their home environment. A trigger is simply something that cause you to use a drug without thinking about actually using.

Have you ever watched a movie or TV show and the actor or actress is doing something such as drinking a soda or smoking a cigarette and suddenly you start craving it. This isn’t a clever advertising ploy it is simply a trigger. Everyone has triggers things. They can be for chocolate, soda, exercise, or any other object or activity.

Unfortunately, some triggers are worse for you than others. In the case of drugs the trigger is not only intense, it is extremely bad for you. In order to stop an addiction or break the cycle, you have to break the association between the drug and the trigger. Sometimes you need a rehab center to help you do this.
