Finding the Right Alcohol Rehab for Women

gender specific rehab

Rehab for women focuses on issues specific to women, such as pregnancy and motherhood.

Alcohol is legal depressant which causes a drinker to feel relaxed when the substance is consumed. Alcohol also impairs a person’s judgment and thought processes, which is why many people drink it when they are upset or emotional. For some women, alcohol becomes an outlet to their stress, and they begin to abuse it on a frequent basis.

According to the Office of Substance Abuse Services, women are more likely to come from families where there was a member addicted to drugs or alcohol, and they are also more likely to attribute the cause of their substance abuse to family history or environmental stress. Moreover, research indicates that women who suffer from addiction have a history of too much responsibility in their family environment, and have experienced more disruption in their families than men who suffer from addiction.

Prolonged alcohol abuse can lead to addiction and dependency and this can be a fatal problem in a woman’s life. However, stopping drinking after an addiction has formed may be extremely difficult for a woman to do on her own. An alcohol rehab program is the best choice for any woman to make when trying to overcome an alcohol addiction. Some women feel more comfortable around other women, and because of this there are gender based alcohol rehabs.

Alcohol Addiction and Women

Alcohol rehab geared towards women will help a woman get through the painful physical withdrawal symptoms that stem from alcohol detox as well as the psychological withdrawals symptoms.

When searching for the right women based alcohol rehab program, a woman will have to decide on the type of environment she wishes to accomplish her treatment in and she will have to decide on what she can afford for treatment.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, effective addiction treatment programs usually incorporate various components, each directed to a particular aspect of the disease and its consequences. To be effective, addiction treatment must help the person stop using drugs while maintaining a drug free life. In addition, effective treatment programs must help a person achieve productive functioning with their family, in society and at work.

A woman needs to make sure that the treatment program she chooses is one that she feels comfortable in and one that she trusts. In addition, she should make sure that it is a program that will help her get sober as well as help her learn to remain sober once she leaves the program.
