Art Therapy at Drug Rehab Centers

Art therapy is a great tool to use in drug rehab centers.

Art therapy is a great tool to use in drug rehab centers.

Many drug rehab centers have found that art therapy enables the individual to express their thoughts and feelings without saying anything at all but by painting, sculpting or using other forms of art as an expression gateway. Art therapy at drug rehab centers provides a foundation for expressing emotions that helps addicts to overcome difficult feelings that they may otherwise not wish to discuss with their counselors or peers at group or individual therapy.

Many recovering addicts have suffered significant trauma that results in blocks in the brain which prevent the intellectualization or verbal ability to open up and discuss the painful thoughts or feelings that they have. Art therapy at drug rehab centers provides an outlet to get these thoughts and feeling out rather than keeping things buried deep within the soul.

There are many forms of art therapy. Most art therapists at drug rehab centers have formal trainding that helps them to recognize the nonverbal symbols and metaphors that are used during the expressive and creative process of the recovering addict. It is through such therapy that drug rehab centers are able to provide an additional range of counseling based on the art that the addict completes.

Therapists at drug rehab centers use art work as a point of reference when speaking with or working with the addict. Through the art, the addict and the counselor or therapist seek ways to explain and explore feelings and thoughts that are communicated through the art.

The purpose of art therapy at drug rehab centers is to help the addict discover underlying feelings and thoughts that are expressed in the artwork. The art is a way to help the addict discover what the thoughts and feelings they are having mean to them and how those thoughts affect them. This type of therapy provided at drug rehab centers can be a very powerful tool in discovering new ways to express feelings and emotions without using drugs or alcohol.
