Types of Treatment Offered at Alcohol Rehab Centers

overcome alcoholism

Alcohol rehab can help you overcome alcohol addiction through counseling, and sometimes medication.

Alcohol addiction is one of the most, if not the most, difficult addictions for a person to overcome. Alcohol addiction requires treatment for most people. Fortunately, there are various types of alcohol rehab from which a person can choose.

When a person develops an addiction to alcohol, which is the compulsive need to continually seek out and drink alcohol despite the consequences, they will also develop a dependence to the substance. When a person is dependent on alcohol they will go through withdrawal symptoms every time alcohol is no longer in their body. Due to the intensity of the withdrawal symptoms, most people need help during alcohol detox.

When a person detoxes from alcohol they will go through alcohol withdrawal. The withdrawal symptoms from alcohol can be serious and require medical attention. According to the US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health, withdrawal symptoms from alcohol include symptoms like, nausea, anxiety, vomiting, fatigue, depression, loss of appetite, sweating, poor sleeping habits, shakiness, mood swings, and nightmares.

Treatment in Alcohol Rehab Centers

There are numerous treatment options available for people to choose from, and every treatment program may use their own method of rehab to help a person detox from alcohol. Since alcohol withdrawals can be painful and scary for most people to go through, treatment from an alcohol treatment program will help a person get through alcohol detox in a safe and secure environment. Treatments from alcohol rehab centers usually include a combination of medication and therapy, although there are programs that avoid using medication.

One of the more serious symptoms of alcohol withdrawal is known as delirium tremens. If a person experiences delirium tremens during their detox, they will need medical help. Delirium tremens can cause a person to experience severe confusion, seizures, and hallucinations, which can be life threatening and need medical attention.

According to the US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health, people who have alcohol withdrawal symptoms commonly require the need for inpatient treatment at a hospital or program that treats alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Through an alcohol treatment program, a person will be able to be monitored closely to make sure they are not showing signs of delirium tremens.

Medication can help a person avoid having delirium tremens, which is one reason why medication is commonly used in alcohol addiction treatment. A person deciding to get help from an alcohol addiction treatment program should research their options of treatment, because there are numerous types of therapy, and several different medications used to help a person get through alcohol detox. A person will have options of going to different types of treatment programs such as religious or gender based programs, and have options on the type of therapy they wish to use, such as behavioral or family. A person should be sure to find a program that they feel comfortable in and that they feel meets their needs.
