Alcoholics anonymous can help you recover once and for all!
The traditional twelve-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous outlines a course of action that is set for the recovery from addiction or compulsions as well as other behavioral problems. This 12-step type treatment was originally designed as a means of recovering from alcoholism but is now synonymously used for the treatment of all types of addiction. Today, Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, and various other treatment groups use a similar adaptation of the 12-step program of treatment that was founded by Alcoholic Anonymous in 1939.
The 12-step program involves the process of admitting to a lack of control, realizing that there is a higher power one can look to for strength, understanding past errors and making amends for these problems with the guidance of a sponsor, learning how to live life under a new âcode of conductâ and then helping others who suffer from the same addictions. Through the 12 step treatment program, addicts learn how to recover from their addiction. Specifically, Alcoholic Anonymous has closed meetings that are for those who want to quit drinking only but there are many other fellowships that offer 12 step programs for various other addictions including narcotic addiction, cocaine addiction and even eating disorders such as overeating.
A Look at the Twelve Steps
The original 12 steps as published by Alcoholics Anonymous are as follows:
We admitted we were powerless over alcohol â that our lives had become unmanageable.
Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
Continues to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
