Drug Rehab – How long will I still feel drug cravings?
You will feel cravings for the drug during drug rehab.
So you’re thinking about starting a drug rehab program to get the help you need to overcome an addiction to drugs – now what? You probably have lots of questions and most of all you’re probably wondering how long you will have to deal with the cravings that you feel every time you try to stop using. When you are in recovery, one of the most difficult things to deal with is the urge that you have to continue using drugs. These cravings tend to pop up at the least expected (or sometimes the most anticipated) times and they can be extremely difficult to deal with.
When you start drug rehab you will have lots of times that you crave drugs. You may wake up in the morning craving drugs, you may go to be at night craving drugs and there will be many times during the day that you sit and just wish you had one more fix, one more hit or just one more pill. Unfortunately, cravings are a very major factor in drug addiction and you must learn how to overcome these cravings without actually using the drugs. When you go to group therapy you may think that you should compare your cravings and your recovery to the feelings that others in group treatment have experienced. While this can help you to gauge a better time frame as to when you can expect to see some real changes in the level of the cravings that you have, no two people and their addictions or recovery are the same so this won’t always be of much help.
Cravings typically are the worst during the first days of drug rehab when you are in detox. Although detox can be difficult, in most cases, the cravings that you are feeling with subside quite significantly after you complete drug detox so you definitely have something to look forward to. Although you will likely experience some pretty intense drug cravings during drug detox, once this phase of drug rehab is completed you will have fewer and fewer cravings and more time to focus on your addiction recovery.
Another important thing to consider is that studies have shown that if you can take your mind off of a craving or urge to use drugs when the urge arises, and if you keep you mind on something else for a few minutes than you will be able to condition yourself to overcome these urges without using drugs or alcohol. As time goes on, the urges will become less prevalent, they will be less significant and they will be less noticeable so you will find that recovery comes a bit easier.
Drug rehab centers can work with you to help teach you how to resist the urge to use drugs and to put your mind on something else so that you can make a full recovery from addiction. So, the answer to the question – how long will I have to feel these drug cravings? You will feel the drug cravings for weeks, months or even years but this doesn’t mean that the cravings will always be so significant and severe. The most important thing to remember is that drug rehab will help you to deal with these cravings and ultimately you can make a full recovery from addiction.
