8 Things You Wouldn’t Expect from Inpatient Drug Rehab
If you have never been to inpatient rehab, you probably do not know what to expect from it. There are a lot of things that are standard across all inpatient rehabs such as detoxification, withdrawal, counseling, and medication. Fortunately, that is not all there is to it. Many people find things they would not expect in an inpatient rehab.
1. Friends
In drug rehab, you will find friends. People like you who have similar backgrounds. Some people say that the friends that they meet in rehab help more than some of the counseling and other activities. Although friendship is not required, many people find that having someone to talk to who understands is extremely helpful.
2. 24 Hour Help
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, you will find 24 hour nonhospital or residential care in an inpatient rehab. This means that there is someone to help you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you need counseling or just someone to talk to the inpatient facility has staff on hand to help you. They also usually have an on call doctor in case you need medical assistance on the off hours.

3. Counseling for Issues Aside from Drug Use
Counseling is a part of all inpatient and outpatient rehab. Most people do not realize that that counseling does not just extend to addiction counseling. Many people have a co-occurring disorder. You will receive both counseling and medical help for this disorder as well.
4. Experiencing Stories Just Like Yours
During inpatient care, you’ll meet people with similar stories and experiences as you.
Many people in rehab have lived similar lives to yours. They will share the same stories, with the same problems, and the same experiences as you do with your drug addiction. This is a key part of group counseling.
5. Medical Help
It does not occur to many who enter inpatient rehab that they receive medical care as well as drug treatment. Most inpatient centers have medical personnel on staff or on call to treat anything that might come up.
6. Exercise
Most inpatient programs today have some form of exercise program. This program extends to weight training, aerobics, and yoga depending on your interests. Some even use yoga as a treatment technique.
7. Education
Not only will you receive education about your illness and addiction, you will receive education on:
how to live without the drugs
how to structure your life so you do not go back to using
how to avoid your triggers
how to improve your self esteem
many other things
Part of the point of inpatient rehab is to prevent your relapse into drug use. By teaching you these things it helps to keep you on the path to recovery.
Many people believe that if they enter inpatient rehab, they will not be able to see their families. In fact, most inpatient rehabs encourage family visits and family counseling.
