According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, addiction rates are increasing. This coincides with a rise in mental and emotional illness. Most people who seek treatment for addiction do so by going to a rehab center. Rehab centers can treat both addiction and co-occurring disorders.
What are Co-Occurring Disorders?
Co-occurring disorders are disorders that occur along with an addiction. Some of these co-occurring disorders are:
These disorders can be the cause or the result of the addiction. Most people with an addiction are diagnosed with a co-occurring disorder. Although each person is different, the reasons for drug use are often very similar.
When people start using a drug, they very often do it because of a mental illness. This is called self-medicating. People self medicate to gain relief from the symptoms of the co-occurring disorder. It is very common for you to start addiction treatment and discover that there is an underlying disorder.
How do Treatment Centers Treat Co-Occurring Disorders?
How treatment centers treat co-occurring disorders depends on the type of addiction and the disorder you are suffering from. There are three main types of treatment center. These three types are:
Inpatient treatment centers – inpatient treatment is a residential center that allows patients to remain at the facility while they are treated for the addiction.
Outpatient treatment centers – outpatient treatment is a treatment option where people attend sessions at a treatment facility but do not live at the facility as patients.
Combination treatment centers – combination treatment centers are centers that are both inpatient and outpatient treatment facilities. They usually offer short term inpatient treatment which transitions into outpatient treatment.
CBT has proven beneficial for treating patients with co-occurring disorders.
Although the treatment centers are different, the treatment for an addiction with co-occurring disorder is basically the same.
Treatment generally beings with an evaluation to identify the addiction as well as the disorder. This evaluation is usually accomplished at the intake appointment. Then a treatment plan is developed. This treatment plan includes counseling, medication, and other types of therapy for both the addiction and the disorder. Some therapy types include:
Cognitive behavioral therapy,
Reconditioning therapy,
Medication therapy,
Group and individual counseling,
Art and music therapy, and
Other types of behavioral therapy.
Each treatment plan is slightly different depending on the type of disorder and addiction. Many addictions are treated with detox then counseling. Most mental disorders are treated the same way.
