The Difference Between Inpatient and Outpatient Rehab Centers
Patients at inpatient rehabs live in the facility and have access to round-the-clock care.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, drug abuse and addiction have many dimensions, and they disrupt many aspects of an individual’s life. Because of this treatment is not simple. Effective treatment programs have to incorporate many components, which are each directed to a particular aspect of the illness and its consequences. Addiction treatment must help the person in question stop using drugs and maintain a drug-free lifestyle.
Most of the time rehab programs are needed in order for a person to stop using drugs they have developed an addiction to. The two types of programs that a person must first choose between are inpatient and outpatient rehab centers.
Inpatient and outpatient rehab centers are both designed to help a person overcome an addiction. Inpatient rehab centers are designed for a person to detox at the program and live at the facility for the entire time the person is in the program. Inpatient rehab centers will provide a person with the resources to live in the facility and detox from their addiction in a supervised environment. A person who goes to an inpatient rehab center will have to follow the programās rules and their schedule. However, these rules and schedules are all part in helping the individual overcome their addiction.
At an outpatientĀ rehab center a person will not live at the facility of the program and they will have their freedom to do what they want when they are not in treatment. However, they will still receive treatment for their addiction on scheduled days and times of their choosing. An outpatient program will still provide a person with all of the resources they need to detox and conquer their addiction.
The Choice Between Inpatient and Outpatient Rehab
The main factor that a person deciding on treatment should consider when thinking about going to an inpatient or outpatient treatment program is their daily responsibilities. If a person has a full time job and/or is the main provider in their family, they may want to go to an outpatient program so that they can still fulfill their daily responsibilities. On the other hand, if a personās drug abuse has progressed to the point where they are not fulfilling any daily responsibilities, or if they have stopped work or family responsibilities due to their drug abuse, they should go to an inpatient treatment program, so that they can detox while being provided with the education and therapy they need to regain control of their life.
