The decisions you make in life will always have an impact on what happens next and when you decide to change your life for the better, you want to make the most out of those changes.

Before going to rehab it is good to get your affairs in order and talk with your loved ones.

Whether you have chosen the drug rehab for where you plan to go or not, there are some things you can do, that will help you prepare for the journey and benefit your recovery efforts while you are there.

1.Ā Take Care of Yourself

Get as much rest, hydration, and nutrition as possible before going to drug rehab as these are foremost elements in any detox program. Withdrawal symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and excessive sweating can cause dehydration and drain the body of necessary nutrients to remain stable.

The sooner you take advantage of these elemental issues, the more likely you will, not only, lessen the severity of withdrawals, but, also decrease their durations.

2.Ā Prepare Yourself Mentally

This is a big step, and although you know it is the right thing to do, you will be walking a tight rope until you get there (and after). Don’t waver and don’t fear. Focus on the positive aspects, begin making your future goals, write things down that you want to accomplish.

Remember, just by making this decision, you are one of the lucky ones. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, in 2013, “Among the 22.7 million individuals 12 or older who needed treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol use problem, an estimated 2.5 million received treatment at a specialty facility for an illicit drug or alcohol problem.”

3.Ā Prepare Yourself for the Journey

You may have affairs to put in order if you plan to go for an extended drug rehab and this where asking for help can be most beneficial. Get rid of all paraphernalia and reminders of use, delete contact information for dealers, and pack only those things that are allowed by the center and absolutely necessary for you to take.

4.Ā Don’t Binge

Many people who enroll in a drug rehab want to make one more valiant effort to get high and some people risk overdose by binging on their drug of choice. Overindulgence can also lead to more withdrawal severities and complications because compromised health and the existence of more drugs to have to detox from.

5.Ā Don’t Rush Your Withdrawals

Detox programs are there to help you withdraw more safely and effectively. Don’t risk health complications or your endurance ability by trying to detox alone. It is important that program administrators know your levels of dependence to help you gain the most positive and effective outcomes from your treatment plans.
