Coping with Chronic Pain in After Drug Rehab

Chronic pain is a common symptom to deal with in drug rehab.

Chronic pain is a common symptom to deal with in drug rehab.

Thousands of people suffer from chronic pain disorders such as Fibromyalgia or other serious conditions that result in uncontrollable pain for the patient. But if you are a recovering addict, how can you cope with chronic pain after you have completed drug rehab? What are the dangers of managing chronic pain and how can you prevent yourself from becoming addicted to pain-killer medications after you have recovered from a drug addiction?

There are many dangers of taking prescription medications, even for those who have never suffered from addiction before, prescription drug addiction is a possibility. When you have uncontrollable pain that you cannot get over, the risk of addiction to prescription pain medicines is a dire situation. For those who suffer from chronic pain, many rehab centers employ specialized programs that are geared at helping those who suffer from chronic pain.

Estimates report that as many as 116 million adults in America suffer from chronic pain and millions of them do not use narcotic painkillers. For chronic pain when you have already been addicted to drugs in the past, some alternative methods of treatment may be just as effective as painkillers and could save you the heartache of becoming once again addicted to drugs. Many rehab centers work with patients to overcome chronic pain and cope with it effectively without drugs. The following treatments are commonly used to bypass chronic pain without the use of dangerous prescription medications or other drugs:

  • Acupuncture
  • Alternative medicine
  • Herbal medicine
  • Massage
  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Exercise
  • Healthy diet

While you may not always be able to cope with chronic pain without narcotics, if you have completed drug rehab in the past and you now have problems with chronic pain, consider how easily you could become addicted to prescription medications before saying yes to that prescription. It is recommended that you attempt other forms of treatment prior to the prescription to determine if the pain can be alleviated with an alternative method. If you do have to take prescriptions, make sure that your doctors know that you are a recovering addict. This way you will have a support system to help you during this time of need and hopefully you will be prevented from falling victim to addiction once again.
