Drug or alcohol addiction is a serious condition that is actually considered a disease but the disease is treatable. When addiction is treated properly, many addicts can go on to live completely normal and fulfilling lives post addiction. A major part of addiction treatment surrounds what is known as relapse prevention. Relapse prevention is a way that rehab centers help individuals who are addicted to drugs or alcohol to avoid relapse. Essentially, relapse prevention is a strategy that helps addicts to cope effectively with the addiction and the triggers that could cause relapse. Various activities are provided by drug and alcohol rehab centers to help prevent relapse. These activities are all part of a relapse prevention program.

Spiritual Counseling

A large part of addiction and the problems that are caused by addiction can be attributed to the effects that addiction has on an individual emotionally. Spiritually, individuals who suffer from addiction need counseling, guidance and support to heal. Many relapse prevention programs incorporate spiritual counseling and emotional therapy into the program to help prevent relapse for individuals while healing them spiritually.

Anger Management

For many addicts, the trigger that causes them to drink or use drugs is directly related to their anger or emotions. Anger management classes as well as various other types of stress reduction classes such as yoga, tai-chi and meditation are offered at relapse prevention programs in rehab centers to help individuals learn how to effectively cope with anger that causes them to use drugs or alcohol.

Acupuncture and Other Alternative Treatments

Many rehab centers use acupuncture and other types of alternative treatments as a means of helping individuals cope with stress, deal with pain and reduce other potential triggers in life that cause them to abuse drugs or alcohol. Relapse is often the result of stress so most relapse prevention programs surround ideas of helping addicts to learn new (and effective) ways of coping with stress without the use of drugs or alcohol.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

An important and integral part of relapse prevention in drug and alcohol rehab centers is the treatment of dually diagnosed conditions. It’s vital to the success of an addicts treatment that any underlying dual diagnosis conditions be recognized and treated to prevent relapse. Most relapse prevention programs will also provide treatment for mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression or other conditions as well.

Other Addictions

Finally, many addicts will suffer relapse as a result of succumbing to other addictions post treatment such as sexual addictions, gambling addiction or eating disorders. Relapse prevention programs at drug rehab centers know that it is important to provide access to treatment for all types of co-occurring addictions or other addictions that could arise after drug or alcohol addiction treatment is completed. Relapse prevention programs will offer help and support for gambling addiction, sexual addictions and a range of other potential addictions that can result when an individual is in treatment or fresh out of treatment.
