New Community Program Helps Addicts, Families with Addiction
The Family Support Navigator Program is a new option for individuals in Corning, New York for addiction treatment. This outreach program doesn’t just help addicts, though; it is also focused on helping the family members of addicted individuals navigate the process of recovery as well as their feelings toward their loved one’s addiction. The program is associated with AIM Independent Living Center and opened up just a few weeks ago, so it is still accepting new patients looking for help. It received its funding from the New York State’s Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.
According to Allison O’Dell, the services coordinator for OASAS, “If you come to us with any type of issue, we’re going to get you pointed in the right direction. Even if it’s not working with me long-term, you can get confidential, free support headed in the right direction whether it’s a referral to a treatment provider or a self-help group, or just simply sitting down and finding out what is an addiction and then going on your way.”
Can Families Help People Get Treatment for Addiction?
Family members and friends can, in fact, help addicted individuals seek treatment and get the help they need in order to build strong, effective recoveries. These individuals can encourage their loved ones to seek care, help them find the right treatment centers, and even offer the support necessary that will allow them to stay in treatment.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, people who have family members supporting them while they are in professional addiction treatment are often more likely to stay in the program longer than those who do not. This also intensifies the effect of the treatment itself, which is always more effective if the individual stays for the full duration of the program.
Where Can I Get Help for My Issues with a Loved One’s Addiction?
In truth, many people struggle with their loved ones’ addictions too, and this can also require treatment of some type. In order to let go of difficult feelings of neglect and hurt as well as to stop enabling behaviors, you may want to seek a certain type of treatment as well.
• Individualized therapy can help you work through feelings of frustration, guilt, and pain associated with a loved one’s addiction. This can be helpful, especially if you don’t feel you have anyone you can currently talk to about this problem.
• There are support groups designed specifically for the loved ones of addicts. These can include 12-step groups like Al-Anon or Nar-Anon, which focus on the journey of those in recovery from addiction as well as the difficulty of loving someone with a substance use disorder.
• Family therapy is available at many detox and rehab centers. These programs can help families work out difficult feelings, recognize enabling behaviors, and learn to function better as a unit.
Depending on your situation, there are many different options available for you to discuss your difficulties in living with or loving an addict as well as to learn how best to interact with these individuals.
