Equine Therapy at Drug Rehab Centers

Equine therapy is known to help people in drug rehab programs.

Equine therapy is known to help people in drug rehab programs.

Equine therapy is a type of therapy that involves individuals working with horses to rebuild their trust and responsibility despite addiction. Horses can help an addict to build a new and trusting relationship while also learning responsibility which is often lost to addiction. Unfortunately, when an addict relies on drugs or alcohol for a prolonged time they tend to forget what matters and is important in life such as having a daily routine and maintain responsibilities such as caring for oneself or for family members when needed. Equine therapy offers addicts in rehab centers a combination of responsibility and soothing activities that can help to promote emotional and physical healing after drug addiction.

How Does Equine Therapy at Drug Rehab Centers Work?

Equine therapy works by providing an addict or recovering addict with a “friend” (the horse) to form a bond with. The horse will not point fingers or call names and does not know or care that the individual is a recovering addict. There are no preconceived notions or expectations from the horse which creates a “clean slate” type environment in which to build a relationship. This teaches addicts how to build trust and learn to love again. Additionally, individuals who are in drug rehab and who take part in equine therapy are able to learn how their individual behaviors affect others.

Equine therapy will help addicts to rebuild a sense of responsibility by providing them with a daily routine that is to be followed. Each day the addict will tend to the horse and take part in various aspects of the care of the animal including feeding, grooming, and stall cleaning. Additionally, the individual will spend quality time with the horse, walking the horse, riding the horse and caring for the animal. The hope is that by providing a positive atmosphere for the individual to work with an animal and to rebuild a sense of responsibility then ultimately they will not turn back to drugs or alcohol.

Advantages of Equine Therapy in Drug Rehab Centers

The advantages of equine therapy can range from helping an addict to develop a sense of responsibility to helping them to regain trust in others. Equine therapy helps addicts to learn directly how their actions and behaviors affect others which can help to prevent them from using drugs or taking part in negative behaviors in the future. Equine therapy promotes positive activity among recovering addicts which can help them to seek more positive activity in the future rather than stoop back into drugs.

Equine therapy is also a very soothing and comforting way to heal. Since the horse doesn’t care about the past that the addict has, the time that an individual spends with the horse is well spent and there are no apprehensions. It’s a time for the individual to take their mind off things and heal both emotionally and spiritually. Equine therapy is a very advantageous activity and an excellent addition to any drug rehab program.
