What Not to Say to Someone who Needs Addiction Treatment
Many times when people focus on what you need to say when you want someone close to you to seek treatment. They never realize that it is equally important to know what not to say to someone who needs addiction treatment. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, addiction is a disease. When talking to people about their addiction it is vital to remember that. What you say can mean the difference between getting them the help they need and them running from treatment.
It is All Your Fault
This one is obvious. Blaming someone for their addiction or for what they do while they are on drugs is futile. All it accomplishes is low self esteem, depression and ultimately more drug use.

Your Parents Caused This
Although blaming ones parents is all the rage, blaming someone else’s parents is just bad form. Drug use and addiction is not really anyone’s fault.
Rehab is for Losers
Discouraging some who wants to seek treatment or who is in need of it is always a bad idea. Many addicts already have negative thoughts about rehab, there is no reason why you should discourage them with this particular statement.
You can Control your Addiction
Don’t tell an addict to just get over it; an addiction isn’t an easy problem to overcome.
This statement is just false. Part of the definition of addiction is that the addicted person cannot control it.
Why Can’t you be Like your Sister, Brother, or Another Person?
Asking why someone cannot be more like their other family members or other people in their life is pointless. Each person is an individual. They have unique needs and sometimes addictions.
You will Always be an Addict
Although many people believe this, others do not. Saying someone will always be an addict is defeating the person before they start.
You Just Need to Get Over It
Telling someone to just get over an addiction is like telling someone to just get over diabetes or heart disease. You cannot do it without help.
Can’t you Just Stop?
Again, if an addict could just stop then they would, particularly if they want to. Unfortunately, part of being addicted is the inability to stop using the drug or alcohol.
You are Going to Go Back to Using, Just you Wait and See
Negative thinking is the easiest way to defeat an addict in recovery. Although relapses do happen, telling someone they are going to relapse is not the way to encourage them to seek treatment or stay in treatment.
This is just not true. Unfortunately, in some addictions there is no choice whether the person stops or not. Part of being an addict is the fact that no matter how much they may want to they cannot stop using on their own. It has nothing to do with selfish behavior.
