How do You Know When You Need Rehab for Internet Addiction?

Despite the American Psychological Association’s doubts that internet addiction can be considered an actual addiction there are points that an obsession with the internet fits the definition. The persistent and compulsive use of the internet to the determent of a person’s life or livelihood definitely exists. Many people report that the internet has ruined their families and their lives. There are rehab centers that specialize in treating internet addiction.

What is Internet Addiction?

Internet addiction

An Internet addiction can come in many forms, including social media addiction.

Internet addiction is the compulsive use of the internet. It is important to remember that an addiction is a compulsive, persistent action and cannot be controlled by the person who is doing it. Internet addiction happens when someone cannot stop using the internet for activities such as social media, games, or pornography. Each of these can be addictions by themselves such as:

  • social media addiction – addiction to the attention that social media provides or sometimes an underlying personality disorder that causes use of social media to the point where it becomes detrimental.
  • video game addiction – addiction to the competition and endorphin rush as well as the escape that video games provide. People have actually died from a gaming addiction by neglecting their bodies or health while gaming.
  • pornography addiction – this is an addiction to both the feeling that pornography provides and the escape from real relationships that it allows.

Someone who is addicted to the internet may suffer from all of these issues or just one of them. Many aspects of the internet can be addictive or cause compulsive behavior.

What are the Consequences of Internet Addiction?

As with any addiction, there are consequences to internet addiction. Many activities on the internet are expensive but monetary issues are not the only consequence. There is also:

  • isolation – people addicted to the internet might have a lot of internet friends but they are isolated from friends and family.
  • lowered productivity – many times internet addiction becomes exposed in the work environment.
  • loss of job – many companies have strict policies for internet use and an internet addict can easily get fired for these policies because they cannot help themselves from using the internet.
  • loss of family – internet cheating and other social activities often result in divorce or damage to the family structure.
  • dissociation – an internet addict may dissociate themselves from real life and become delusional. They may start to confuse reality with the fantasy on the internet.

These are only a few consequences of internet addiction, many more are being revealed as people study this condition further.
