Coping with Depression While Attending Inpatient Drug Rehab
In many cases, it is necessary for a person to attend inpatient drug rehab. Perhaps the drug the individual was abusing has caused them severe physical or psychological issues or they are in need of 24-hour surveillance and care. For whatever reason, inpatient care can be necessary, but it may also cause a patient to develop symptoms of depression, or worsen a disorder they already have. There are many ways, though, of coping with the depressive symptoms that can possibly develop while attending inpatient drug rehab.
Engage with Your Support System
Family support will help you through rehab.
If you have a strong support system at home of friends, family members, and others who want to see you get well, it can be incredibly beneficial to engage with them and to discuss your feelings. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, “Relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love, and hope” are often essential to one’s recovery as well as to increasing strength and well being during rehab. In addition, you can also attend family or couples counseling sessions with those in your support network, which can help your loved ones understand your need for their support. If you know that those you care about are still thinking of you and engaging with you during your treatment, it will decrease your feelings of loneliness and isolation.
Talk to Your Doctor
Especially if you are struggling thoughts of extreme depression or suicide, but even if you are only experiencing with mild issues, it is important to talk to your doctor. It is very common for patients to experience these feelings while in inpatient rehab, and it is important that your doctor is aware of them so they can treat them properly. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, it is much more common for individuals with substance abuse problems to also suffer from mood disorders, and it is important for you to receive treatment (through behavioral therapy, pharmacological treatment, or both) for this condition in addition to your addiction to avoid either from causing you further problems down the line.
Utilize Alternative Methods
A number of alternative treatment methods you can use during inpatient care can be very helpful toward reducing your feelings of depression. Journaling, for example, can be extremely therapeutic and it can be helpful to put your feelings down on paper. Many inpatient programs also offer yoga, Tai Chi, or other programs that utilize physical activity, and these can be very beneficial toward minimizing depressed feelings. Deciding to make these methods a part of your overall treatment, with the approval of your doctor of course, can help you treat both your addiction and your mood imbalances simultaneously. This can be largely beneficial to your overall recovery.
