Types of Rehab for Drug Abuse and Addiction

Just as there are many types of addiction, there are many different types of rehab. Which type of rehab is best, depends on the type of addiction as well as the individuals personality. Each person has different needs and rehabs are not one size fits all. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the main types of rehab are inpatient and outpatient. These fall under two categories of treatment, short and long term treatment sessions. In these different rehab options there are also a variety of sub options. It is important for doctors, therapists, counselors, and patients to work together combine these options into a treatment program that has the best chance of a good outcome.

Inpatient Treatment Options

addiction therapy

There are many different treatment options for addiction.

Inpatient programs are available as both a short term program and a long term program. During short and long term care patients receive counseling, medication management, acute care, and other services. Each has its purpose, benefits, and drawbacks.

  • Short term – this is for acute care. When a person is in withdrawal and needs acute, intensive care, they are a candidate for short term inpatient care. This is usually medically necessary care and helps a patient overcome the most severe symptoms of withdrawal. As an inpatient program they do not normally leave for at least a week.
  • Long term care – this is for patients that are at a high risk for relapse due to their home environment. They stay at a rehab center while they receive medication management, counseling, and other services.
  • Counseling – There are both long and short term counseling options. Someone who is inpatient can access counseling 24 hours a day. The intensive counseling benefits users who have other issues or need intense behavioral therapy. Therapy and counseling are usually carried out daily. The therapy can be either individual or group therapy.
  • Medication management – doctors are more likely to use medication assisted treatment when the patient is either a long or short term resident of a facility.
  • Holistic therapies – inpatient holistic therapy caters to the mind body and spirit.

Inpatient programs are not for everyone. There are several reasons why someone would not prefer an inpatient program. When this happens an outpatient program is the best choice.

Outpatient Treatment Options

Outpatient treatment programs involve a person coming into the treatment center once a day, week, or month to complete their rehabilitation. Outpatient programs are less restrictive than inpatient programs. There are many reasons why someone would want to go to outpatient treatment. A few of those reasons are:

  • They have a family who they do not want to know about the drug treatment.
  • They have a job and cannot leave it for the length of time that inpatient treatment requires.
  • They are not a high risk for relapse or they do not have triggers in their living environment.
  • They already went to inpatient acute care and were released to continue rehab on an outpatient basis.

Outpatient treatment offers an extensive variety of options. Like inpatient treatment, a patient can get individual and group counseling, holistic treatment, and medication management. The outpatient services are not as intensive as inpatient services. They are available to people who are relatively stable in their environment but still want off the substance they are abusing.

Medication Assisted Rehab

Medication assisted treatment is a form of therapy that doctors use in combination with other types of therapy. It can be inpatient or outpatient depending on the facility and their desire to change. Doctors give medications that help with addiction from the acute phase to the management phase. Many of these drugs are specifically designed to combat relapse and cravings for the drug. Most states require doctors to have a special license to dispense these medications. Each doctor has his or her own prescribing rules particularly in an outpatient setting. This is not to say that medication assisted treatment is rare. It is one of the most commonly used treatments for heroin and opiate addiction. Some of the medications used are methadone, Suboxone, catapress, norvasc, SSRI’s and benzodiazepines.

Individual and Group Counseling Rehab

Individual and group therapy is available in both residential and outpatient facilities. They should offer a variety of types of counseling including behavioral therapy and behavior modification. Patients often combine this type of therapy with medication-assisted treatment and counseling. Counseling includes a number of therapies including talk therapy and behavioral therapy. Each therapy is effective for different aspects of the addiction.

Holistic Treatment in Rehab

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Susan Li Conference, holistic therapy combines conventional treatments with massage therapy, spiritual medicine, and other whole body practices. It is based on the belief that treating the whole person not only solves problems by using medication and therapy, it address the spirit and mind as well. By treating people as a whole person it makes problems and addiction recovery easier to deal with.

Choosing a Rehab for Drug Abuse

There are several choices when judging what drug rehab is the best. The rehab must treat the symptoms as well as the disease of addiction. It should help a person avoid relapse and help the cravings. No matter what type of rehab a person chooses it should be an overall program of wellness. It should help the person overcome the issues that caused the addiction in the first place as well as help them rebuild their life. For help finding treatment call 888-646-0635Who Answers? toll free anytime.
