Things to Think About When Choosing Drug and Alcohol Rehab

When you are trying to decide on a drug or alcohol rehab program, there are many things to consider. Choosing a rehab facility and the program that goes along with it is a major step in your overall recovery; the wrong rehab center may wind up being less than helpful to you and causing you to go without the treatment you need. However, understanding how to choose a facility and what to think about when you’re doing so will allow you to start a more successful recovery even before you’ve begun treatment.

Types of Facilities

According to the NIDA, “Research studies on addiction treatment typically have classified programs into several general types or modalities.” While certain programs may not fit into these generalized types, most can be considered one of the below.

  • Long-term residential treatmentĀ
    • Inpatient rehab with 24-hour care that lasts longer than 6 months and sometimes up to a year or more is considered long-term. TCs or therapeutic communities are a very beneficial type of treatment model used in long-term residential treatment facilities.
  • Short-term residential treatmentĀ
    • This may last as few as 3 weeks or as long as 3 months. Normally, the most beneficial treatment length is somewhat longer than 90 days. However, some individuals need to start with short-term residential treatment in order to become more stabilized (for example, those who experience stimulant-induced psychosis) before moving on to another.
  • Outpatient treatmentĀ
    • Outpatient rehab can often last anywhere from 90 days to an indefinite amount of time. This is based on its level of effectiveness for the patient. Individuals can receive treatment quickly while still being able to live their lives.

Budget

treatment for addiction

When choosing a rehab program, it’s good to look for a program that offers an individualized treatment approach.

Certain substance abuse rehab centers can be extremely expensive. As a rule, it is important to consider how much you can pay and to choose a program that fits into the budget you’ve created for yourself. In some situations, however, people cannot afford to pay anything for their addiction rehab program which means that they will need to attend free treatment. According to SAMHSA, “Some facilities offer substance abuse treatment at no charge or a sliding fee scale based on income and other factors.”

Individual Needs

Your individual needs, be they related to your addiction syndrome or not, are important and they should always be considered while you choose your rehab program. According to the NIDA, “Effective treatment attends to multiple needs of the individual, not just his or her drug abuse.” Some of the needs you may want to consider include

  • Care for your children
  • A safe place to stay
  • Financial, educational, legal, or employment help
  • A medical condition either caused by or exacerbated by drug abuse
  • Any needs associated with your “age, gender, ethnicity, and culture”
  • Language assistance

When you consider all the parts of your life which may be affected by your treatment, it is important to find a rehab center that adequately addresses these issues.

Once you have thought about some of the most important issues that need to be addressed, then you can start to look for a rehab center that fits your needs. It is important to eliminate the ones that don’t until you’re able to find the best fit for you.
