Rehab insurance can help you pay for the alcohol addiction treatment you need and get you into recovery.
Alcohol rehab insurance is when a person’s health insurance covers some of or all of the expenses of alcohol rehab. A person may need help overcoming their alcohol addiction, and since alcohol detox can be dangerous, a person may need medical resources to help them detox. Many health insurance companies will help cover the cost of rehab because rehab uses a variety of medical resources to help a person overcome their addiction, such as medication.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the three main medications used to help treat alcohol addiction include naltrexone, acamprosate, and disulfiram. Naltrexone works by blocking opioid receptors that are involved in the craving for alcohol. Acamprosate helps to reduce symptoms of extended withdrawal like anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, and dysphoria. Disulfiram interferes with the effects of alcohol causing a person to feel nausea and have palpitations if they drink any alcohol.
If a person went to see their primary care physician and had any of these medications prescribed, their insurance company would help cover the visit to the doctor and probably some of the cost of the medication. Why should this be different if a person receives the same help at rehab? This is why many insurance companies will provide alcohol rehab insurance.
Why is Rehab Covered by Insurance?
There are various reasons as to why rehab is covered by some insurance companies, the top of which is saving money in the long run. If a person has an alcohol addiction problem and they continue to abuse alcohol they will experience a plethora of health problems throughout their life from their alcohol abuse. If a person has health insurance they will use their insurance every time they see a doctor or go to the emergency room for their alcohol related health problems. But, if an insurance company helps a person get the proper treatment for their addiction, in the long run the insurance company will save themselves money.
According to the US Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health, long term abuse of alcohol can cause permanent damage to a person’s brain cells. Damage to brain cells may lead to a person having permanent problems with their memory and it can lead to them having irrational behavior. Furthermore, alcohol abuse and addiction can also lead to permanent nerve damage as well as permanent organ damage, which can be fatal.
Since alcohol addiction not only causes harm to a person’s psychical body but also to their mental state of mind, insurance companies will try to save themselves money in the long run and help fix the health problem of alcohol addiction.
