Generally, alcoholics suffer great consequences as a result of their uncontrollable desire to drink. Cravings for alcohol are so strong that there’s simply no way to say no or to stop the pain without just one more drink. One drink leads to two and two leads to four, before you know it, the consequences of alcohol abuse begin to set in and in some cases, the irreparable damage that occurs is just to much for the addict (or their loved ones) to take. In fact, millions of cases of alcohol abuse end in bodily harm, accidental death or suicide.
Alcohol abuse affects more than just the user. Everyone around the individual is affected negatively by the use of alcohol including the children of alcoholics, the spouse of the alcohol abuser, the friends and other family members. Even co-workers and other members of society are negatively impacted by alcohol abuse and the consequences that this substance abuse has as a whole.
Financially, those who drink alcohol excessively are essentially throwing money down the drain. In some cases, they can afford to do this and there is little financial impact but in most cases, the financial impact of alcohol abuse is much more alarming. Most people cannot afford to simply throw hundreds of dollars each week or month away and this can provide great consequences to the alcohol abuser as well as to other members of the household. Bills may go unpaid, utilities shut off for non-payment, and there’s always a risk of losing a job due to lack of productivity or lack of presence or being under the influence while at work.
The consequences of alcohol abuse don’t stop at the financial impact and the burden that it causes on others. There are many health risks associated with heavy drinking including liver damage, hypertension and damage to the heart or other organs. Brain damage can even occur when alcohol is abused heavily or for a prolonged period of time and this is irreparable. Damage to the brain can lead to lifelong consequences and may make it difficult for the addict to get a decent job, hold regular conversations or otherwise function as a normal member of society.
Emotional consequences of alcohol abuse are a whole added factor to the story. Emotionally, the addict is often reserved and may not spend adequate time with friends or family members. Socially inept as a result of their alcohol intake, many alcoholics wind up depressed, anxious or even suicidal. Relationships may suffer great damage as a result of alcohol abuse as well. Even children in the household of an alcohol abuser suffer great consequences that can carry with them throughout the rest of their childhood and well into their adult lives.
