For the loved ones or family members of an individual who is addicted to drugs or alcohol, intervention may seem like a last resort effort that absolutely must work – so what happens if an intervention fails? Most people don’t think ahead to determine what will happen in the event that an intervention fails and further have no idea why an intervention may have failed after the fact. Various factors can lead to either the success or failure of an intervention. It may be that the intervention was not carried out properly or that the addict just wasn’t willing to get help for their addiction. Here’s a look at some of the top reasons why some interventions fail.
Not Using a Professional Interventionist can Cause an Intervention to Fail
While the use of an interventionist is not always an absolute requirement for an intervention to be successful, there is a reason why interventionists are called just that. They work hard for their training and education in the field and they are able to keep the family members on track to the final goal throughout the intervention process, after all the primary concern here is making sure that the addict gets the help that they need. An interventionist can make sure that the entire intervention is performed in the most effective way to assure the greatest chance for successful intervention.
Not Having a Plan of Action for the Intervention can Cause it to Fail
If you are trying to intervene in a drug or alcohol addiction and you do not have an immediate plan of action then there’s a chance that the intervention will fail. Before any intervention begins it is vital that the family members and loved ones who are attempting the intervention have a plan of action ready to follow through with. This means that they need to figure out where the individual will go for treatment, how it will be paid for, how the individual will get there, what will happen if they don’t go, who will take care of their other priorities while they are in treatment, etc. If the individual wants more time before they get help, make sure to have a plan in place to assure that this is not possible and that they go immediately (within 24 hours) to treatment. Many interventions fail because the individual says “yes” that they will go to treatment after they do this or that and then that time never comes.
Not Choosing the Best Drug Rehab Center to Provide Treatment for the Individual
If you take the time to do the intervention, make sure that you have done your homework and determined what drug rehab center is going to be able to provide the best type of treatment for the individual. Many interventions seem to take off without a hitch but then once the individual gets to rehab the facility is not the right type of provider for the individual and this leads them to leave treatment only to fall back into their previous ways quickly. It’s important that prior to any intervention taking place, a determination has been made as to what drug rehab center and drug rehab program is needed, where the programs are offered and ultimately where the addict will go as soon as they say “yes” to treatment.
