Evesham Police Help Drug Abusers Get Treatment

The police department in Evesham, New Jersey want to help people struggling with addiction rather than sending them to jail or prison. This is why they have implemented a new rule as of March 23, 2018 that each and every Monday, individuals living with addictions can come to the police department and ask for help. When someone arrives on a Monday and is honest about their need for assistance in coping with their substance abuse problem, they will not need to fear arrest or charges being filed against them. They can even turn in drugs or paraphernalia used to abuse drugs without fear of a possession charge.

As the first department in the county of Burlington to execute this new rule, Evesham will be a sort of guinea pig to determine if this new rule can actually be beneficial to those who want to get help but fear getting in trouble. Prosecutor Scott Coffina is confident this program will truly help those in need.

“We want to get an individual the help they came for,” he said, “and anyone who comes will be treated with compassion and evaluated.”

How Do I Know If I’m Addicted to Drugs?

It can be difficult to take the long, hard look at yourself and your choices that is necessary for determining if you are truly suffering from drug addiction. But once you do, you can begin to determine what type of help you need and what the next steps will be in order for you to build a safe recovery. Ask yourself the questions below to know if you are likely suffering from an addiction to dangerous drugs.

• Do I abuse drugs every day?
• Do I feel I cannot get through the day, get out of bed, go through something stressful, etc. without using?
• Have my loved ones shown concern for my amount of drug use more than once?
• Do I ignore my responsibilities in order to make more time to use drugs?
• Am I having trouble in school or at work because of my substance abuse?
• Do I put my drug use above everything else, including my loved ones?
• Have the things that used to matter to me become unimportant or uninteresting to me?

You may also ask yourself: “Have I experienced any serious side effects in the past year of my drug abuse, including”:

  • Health problems?
  • Getting fired?
  • Getting a DUI/DWI/arrested?
  • Getting expelled/suspended/reprimanded at school/etc.?
  • Financial problems?
  • Losing a loved one?
  • Despite any issues that have occurred based on my drug abuse, do I feel I will not be able to stop on my own?
  • Have I tried to stop/cut back in the past and been unable to do so?
  • Do I experience physical and/or psychological effects if I stop using drug(s)?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, there is a strong chance you are grappling with an addiction and will require treatment. The first step in the journey to recovery is often detox, which can help you put an end to your substance abuse and safely go through the process of withdrawal.
