Relapsing: What to Do When a Drug Addiction Program Fails

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, when you relapse it is not a failure. Drug addiction is a chronic disease that needs to be treated as such. Relapse is a fact of drug addiction treatment. Not all programs suit all addictions and it is very important that a program be personalized for your needs otherwise it is likely to fail. Few treatment programs work the first time you try to quit. Fortunately, there are things that you can do when your drug addiction program fails and you wind up in relapse.

Examine Why the Program Failed

One of the first things that you need to do is figure out why your treatment program failed. Although it is not unusual to relapse the first time, you need to remember that the relapse cannot continue. By examining why you relapsed, you can stop it from happening again.

The most common cause of relapse is stress. If your relapse was caused by stress, find out what the stress was and change the circumstances. For example, if it was work that was the stressor, then some time off to recover might help prevent another relapse.

Change Treatment Tactics

Addiction Program Fails

Often times stress at home or at work can lead to relapse.

There are many treatment tactics available so if one does not work you can always try another. Many people start with trying to treat their addiction themselves. This is normally the cause of the first relapse. Addiction is almost impossible to self treat. It takes an enormous amount of willpower to go it alone. There are treatment options that help you establish the support system you need to be successful. There are:

  • Outpatient treatment programs

These programs allow you to work or go to school while you are in treatment. You can also stay at home with your family. Although family provides a good foundation for support, many times it is not enough.

  • Inpatient treatment programs

Inpatient treatment programs are residential programs that take you out of the situation entirely. This works for people who are likely to relapse when they remain in their home environment. Family still provides a support foundation but it is also backed up by counseling and other services.

  • Combination treatment programs

Often the most successful type of treatment program, combination programs provide the security and a place to stay during the detox phase and the outpatient freedom and support during the outpatient phase. Combination treatment programs are successful because they provide support even after the inpatient program ends.

A tactic that is not a treatment type but is still necessary is aftercare. Aftercare is extremely important when it comes to successful recovery. Recovery is a lifelong process that does not just stop when a treatment type ends.
