How to Talk to Your Doctor about Addiction

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, addiction is a prevalent disorder it today’s society. It is an unfortunate fact that many people are addicted to a variety of drugs. If you are one of those people and want to end the addiction, it is important to tell a doctor. You might feel guilty or ashamed about the addiction but doctors and treatment centers are there to help you.

Who to Tell

Although you may be worried about telling anyone, telling the right people is extremely important. There are a few things that you should consider before choosing who to tell. You will feel embarrassed or even guilty about the drug use. So consider:

  • Choosing someone you know and who knows you.
  • Choosing someone who specialized in your addiction or in addiction in general.
  • Choosing someone you trust and who will help you find the treatment you need.
  • Choosing a treatment center or referral line that can help you decide on treatment.

All of these are viable options as to who to tell.

Be Honest

When you talk to your doctor, be honest. There is nothing gained by not telling an addiction specialist or a doctor the truth about your addiction. Keep in mind that you are there to get help and they are the ones to best provide it. Only by being honest can your healthcare practitioner understand the problem and treat it.

Not telling the truth might be detrimental to your health. If someone is not honest, treatment mistakes might happen. Withdrawal and detoxification may be a very dangerous if you do not tell them exactly what you were on and how much of it you take. There are ways to make sure that you do not experience the worst of the withdrawal symptoms but those ways are deadly if the wrong one is administered.

Types of Treatment to Consider

Talk to Your Doctor about Addiction

Being honest with your doctor will ensure that you receive the appropriate treatment for your needs.

There are several types of treatment to consider. You will want to discuss these with your doctor or treatment center, before making a final decision on treatment.

  • Inpatient treatment – this is residential treatment. It lasts 14 days, 28 days, 30 days, or sometimes as much as 90 days depending on your addiction and your progress.
  • Outpatient treatment – this is nonresidential treatment and can last any amount of time that you feel that you need.

Both of these treatment types might involve:

  • Individual and group counseling
  • Medication
  • Holistic treatments
  • Herbal medicine
  • Meditation
  • Exercise programs such as yoga or swimming
  • Psychotherapy

Many treatment centers offer these treatments. You just have to find the one that offers the treatments that you want.
