Why Families are Important in Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers

Family support is important for someone attending treatment in a drug and alcohol rehab center, no matter how intensive or how long their treatment will be. In many situations, families can make all the difference by supporting their loved one in treatment and working with them to help facilitate recovery.

Lengthening Treatment Stays

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “Family and friends can play critical roles in motivating individuals with drug problems to enter and stay in treatment.” Once an individual enters a treatment program, it is paramount that the individual stays in the program for the duration of their treatment plan; this is because patients who leave treatment early often have higher relapse rates as well as shakier recoveries.

A rehab program that has been cut short is not able to provide patients with everything they need to succeed in their recovery, and having family members visit and provide support during this time can drastically improve a person’s motivation to stay in treatment and continue their program to the end. As the NIDA states, “strategies for keeping people in treatment are critical,” and making sure that family members and friends are involved in treatment is one of the most effective methods.

Attending Family Therapy

Try out family therapy in drug and alcohol rehab centers.

When family members attend therapy sessions with their addicted loved one, it can make a major difference in the way all the members of the family interact with one another, creating a better situation for both the addict and the other members of the family. In addition, these programs help all individuals related to the issue understand one another’s feelings and be better able to avoid dangerous patterns that can lead to enabling and codependency.

In rehab centers for drug and alcohol abuse, patients can often attend therapy sessions with their parents, siblings, children, or significant others in order to foster better relationships and create a better home life for everyone involved. This can also make a major difference in an individual’s motivation to recover from their substance abuse, as they are able to see through therapy how it affects their loved ones.

Providing Community

Family members who are involved in a person’s treatment provide community, which is one of the four major dimensions that support a life in recovery, as stated by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This is incredibly important because this sense of community helps patients avoid feelings of isolation and depression, reminds them of the person they used to be before drug and alcohol addiction began to affect every aspect of their life, and provides them with hope for the future. “Hope, the belief that these challenges and conditions can be overcome, is the foundation of recovery,” and having the support of family members strengthens an individual’s resolve to perform well in treatment and to, eventually, begin a life in recovery.
