Understanding Alcoholism Treatment

Alcoholism treatment can help you overcome your addiction!

Alcoholism treatment can help you overcome your addiction!

Alcoholism is a dangerous condition that requires immediate treatment. For those who can’t stop drinking alcohol on their own there are options available that can provide help. Alcoholism treatment is providing in a number of ways, most often beginning with alcoholism detoxification and then on to alcoholism rehab centers. For severe cases of alcoholism where the addict does not want to seek help themselves, alcoholism detox may be necessary.

Alcoholism Intervention

An intervention is not always necessary but for the alcoholic who does not wish to find treatment for their condition or who does not want to stop drinking an intervention may be necessary. Some people who suffer from alcoholism may not realize how bad the situation is as they are blind to the problem and do not realize that their drinking has gone out of control. These people need an intervention.

An alcoholism intervention is a process in which the alcoholic is confronted about their drinking problem by friends and family members who care about them. During the intervention, the family or friends will attempt to help the alcoholic realize that their alcohol abuse is negatively impacting their lives and the lives of those around them. Interventions help by showing the alcoholic that their drinking problem is negatively effecting their loved ones and that there is hope.

Alcoholism Detoxification

The most common very first step to alcoholism treatment is detox. During alcoholism detoxification the alcoholic will be in a medically supervised facility where they can safely eliminate the alcohol from their body. During the detoxification stage, the addict will feel many withdrawal symptoms that can range from mild to moderate to severe. Some of these withdrawal symptoms associated with alcoholism can be life threatening which is why detoxing from alcohol in a supervised facility is so important.

During the medical detox the addict will also be examined for other medical conditions. Some of the possible medical conditions that often arise as a result of long term alcoholism include damage to the liver and kidneys and blood clotting. Blood clots can cause heart attack or stroke and liver damage can cause the alcoholic to get jaundice which is dangerous when left untreated.

Alcoholism Rehab Centers

The most important part of any alcoholism treatment program is the rehab center. Alcoholism rehab centers provide specialized treatment and care for the alcoholic to overcome the psychological addiction to alcohol. Whether the addict began drinking socially or to cover up feelings of pain associated with being abused as a child, the alcoholism rehab center is there to help the addict overcome these problems and remain sober.

The following medications may be providing at alcoholism rehab centers to help the addict stay alcohol free and to prevent relapse:

  • Acamprosate which lowers relapse rates for alcoholics
  • Disulfiram which makes the alcoholic feel very sick if they drink within 2 weeks of the drug being administered
  • Naltrexone which reduces alcohol cravings lowering the chance of relapse
