How Teen Drug Rehab Can Help Your Child

teenage rehab

Drug rehab for teenagers provides a special age-based approach to treatment.

Teens who struggle with addiction will more than likely need to attend formal rehab in order to recover. Addiction and drug abuse recovery is difficult even for adults to manage, especially alone. As a parent, the best way to help your child is to seek formal treatment and provide support as he or she attempts to get sober.

What is Teen Drug Rehab Like?

Teen drug rehab will put teenagers together as a group instead of lumping them in with adult patients. This can be extremely important to the health and well-being of your teen, as the facility will be more catered to a young person’s needs. These facilities often offer, as adult facilities do, a treatment regimen of medication and therapy. When used together, they are “important elements of an overall therapeutic process” (NIDA).

You and your teen may choose to have him or her seek treatment in an inpatient facility. These can often be helpful to teen addicts as they keep the patient on track with recovery and away from other distractions that may make it difficult to focus. Of course, there are outpatient facilities available that offer many of the same treatments. Depending on your teen and the need he or she might have for a secure environment, you can make a choice about which facility is best.

How is Teen Drug Rehab Different from Adult Rehab?

According to the NCBI, “adolescents differ from adults both physiologically and emotionally as they make the transition from child to adult and, thus, require treatment adapted to their needs.” This is taken into account in teen rehab. Issues like family and peer pressure are often more relevant to young adults, and teen rehab facilities work to treat these problems.

It is also important for the therapy sessions to never lose sight of the fact that your teen “is for the first time forming an individual sense of self.” This is taken into account by therapists who help teens through this journey. Programs are also more careful to keep the family members informed of the adolescent’s progress and consider their needs as well.

How Will Teen Drug Rehab Help My Child?

There are many ways that this particular type of rehab will help teens struggling with addiction to and dependence on drugs. They are:

  • Allowing the teen to know and interact with other teens who are struggling and hoping to get better
  • Being able to work through issues beyond drug abuse with a therapist or counselor
  • Having a safe environment to talk and work through problems
  • Having someone listen to them who is objective to the situation
  • Getting a doctor’s approved treatment, be it with medications, therapy, or, usually, a combination of both
  • Receiving access to other classes that may help with vocational, educational, or social issues and needs

These facilities can be very beneficial for the teen and the family in situations like these. “A recent study conducted by SAMHSA reveals that treatment for substance use disorder significantly reduces substance use and criminal activity” (NCBI). This is very beneficial to adolescents who are just starting out in life and will need extra help to fight these issues.
