5 Ways Eating Disorder Rehab Helps You Improve Your Body Image

Eating Disorders and the Brain

Rehab centers can help you overcome an eating disorder.

Eating disorders are extremely problematic to an individual and their family, especially when treatment is not received in time. Eating disorders normally stem from a person’s poor and distorted body image of their self. For example, people with anorexia typically believe they are overweight and need to lose weight, even if they do not have any more weight to lose. This type of mentality is extremely difficult for a person to overcome.

According to the National Eating Disorders Alliance, the American society’s obsession with how people look and their body size, along with dissecting each and every body part, can be very destructive to men and women who are forming their own identities. This type of pressure can trigger eating disorders, especially to those who are vulnerable.

When a person suffers from an eating disorder, the reconditioning of their thoughts on body image, and their behavior is necessary, and to do this treatment is required. Treatment for eating disorders will need to be ongoing, and the main goal of treatment will be to help the individual understand the importance of nutrition and to help them get past their negative body image they have of their self.

5 Ways Eating Disorder Rehab Helps a Person Improve Their Body Image

According to the National Eating Disorders Association, the most effective treatment for an eating disorder is a form of psychotherapy or psychological counseling, along with attention to a person’s medical and nutritional needs. Effective treatment should be tailored to the individual, and treatment will vary according to both the severity of the disorder and the person’s individualized problem and needs.

Treatment varies from person to person, but there are five common ways in which an eating disorder rehab will help a person heal from an eating disorder and improve their self-image.

First, an eating disorder rehab will get to know the patient and tailor to their needs. For example if the patient is shy, they will not push them to do things they do not want to do, or if the patient disease not feel comfortable around the opposite sex, then they will make sure to have members of the same sex help them.

Secondly, an eating disorder rehab will develop trust with the person in question. Once trust is established then the rehab can start to help the person see past their delusions on their body image. Thirdly, an eating disorder rehab will use different tactics to help the person begin to eat proper nutrition, this usually takes some time, but it is accomplished.

Fourthly, after the person has begun to eat healthier and has developed trust with the rehab, the treatment program will help the patient see the reality behind body image, and help them to see the truth about their self-image. Lastly, an eating disorder rehab will provide a person with strategies and resources to help them continue to live a healthier life once they stop treatment.
