Survey Finds First-Time Teen Alcohol & Drug Abuse Increases in Summer Months

Teen alcohol & drug abuse treatment can help your teen to overcome their addiction.

Teen alcohol & drug abuse treatment can help your teen to overcome their addiction.

A recent survey has found that more teens abuse alcohol and drugs for the first time during the summer than in any other time of the year. Teens are more likely to drink, smoke cigarettes, or try drugs when they are on summer break with the peak of these first time user situations occurring during June and July.

Estimates have found that more than 11,000 teens try alcohol on an average day in June or July versus an estimated 6,000 during other months of the year. Similar statistics are also true for drug abuse during the summer months versus the remainder of the year. But why?

What Makes Teens Susceptible to Drug or Alcohol Abuse in the Summer?

The increase in first time drug or alcohol abuse that takes place in the summer months is likely due to the additional free time that teens have during these months paired with a reduction in adult supervision that typically takes place over the summertime. So what can parents do to reduce their child’s risk of using alcohol or drugs for the first time or any time for that matter?

Adult supervision is the best way to ensure that teens don’t have access to substances such as cigarettes, alcohol or drugs but as all parents know, it is not possible to watch a teen 24/7. As a result, teens are often left with a substantial amount of free time in which they are not supervised. Another way that parents can prevent or at least reduce the risk of their teen using dangerous substances is to educate them of the dangers of drug or alcohol abuse.

Teens who are on break, have fewer responsibilities and lack adult supervision are likely to fall victim to their own temptation to find out what a drug or drink is like and there is often an increased risk of peer pressure during these months. Summertime is meant to be a fun time but when alcohol and drugs come into play, this time of year can become very dangerous for a teen who decides to abuse these substances for the first time.
