How to Celebrate the Holidays with your friends and Family in Rehab
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, stress is one of the main causes of drug and alcohol addiction. The holidays are known to be a particularly stressful time for many who are already experiencing depression and anxiety. If you are suffering from an addiction that is rapidly growing due to holiday stress you should consider taking advantage of the many rehab options available.
If you are considering inpatient or outpatient rehab there is no reason why you cannot still celebrate the holidays with your friends and family. Both inpatient and outpatient rehabs have activities that your loved ones can take part in. You do not have to be alone just because you decided to end your addiction.
Inpatient Rehab during the Holidays
Inpatient rehabs usually plan family activities around the holidays. They offer:
frequent friend and family visits,
scheduled activities involving your loved ones,
traditional holiday meals and activities, and
expanded visiting hours for the holidays.
Most inpatient rehabs understand that getting rid of an addiction is difficult any time of year but it is particularly trying when it comes to the holidays. It is hard to see your friends and family celebrating while you are working on being sober. This is why most inpatient rehabs encourage friends and family to spend more time with their clients around the holiday season.
Outpatient Rehab during the Holidays
Volunteer with your family this holiday season.
Outpatient rehab allows you to stay with your friends or family while you attend the rehab services. You can participate in any of the holiday gatherings that you choose as long as your remain sober and away from drugs. Many outpatient rehabs offer a variety of sober gatherings and activities that you and your family can participate in. Some common activities offered are:
volunteering activities such as:
o helping deliver food and presents to the needy,
o feeding the homeless at soup kitchens,
o working with rescues and rehabs, and
o helping with food and present drives.
Christmas and Thanksgiving parties,
Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners,
Secret Santa and present exchanges, and
Christmas Caroling.
These activities are available for you and your family while you are working with the rehab to remain sober. Most activities are free or low cost. Just ask your rehab counselor or coordinator for the details. They also sometimes post the activities on common room or lobby bulletin boards.
It is okay to enter rehab in during the holidays. Your friends and family will be glad that you are getting the help that you need to beat an addiction. Many inpatient rehabs have liberal visiting hours during the holidays and you can stay at home and join in the festivities if you are in outpatient rehab.
There is no reason to not enter rehab during the holidays, particularly if your addiction is out of control this time of year. For more information on rehab during the holidays, call us at 888-646-0635Who Answers?. We are here to help.
