Various types of therapy are provided by rehab centers for the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction. The most common types of therapy include individual therapy, fitness therapy, group therapy and various specialty therapy sessions such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some therapy sessions will also include the ability for family members to participate with the patient and receive therapy for the various negative consequences that have resulted from a loved one’s drug addiction.

Individual Therapy at Rehab Centers

Individual therapy is one on one counseling that involves just the patient and the counselor working together. This type of therapy is usually provided on a daily or semi daily basis during inpatient drug rehab and is offered on a less often basis for outpatient rehab programs based particularly on patient need. In severe cases of drug addiction or alcoholism, individual therapy may be provided more than once per day until the therapist feels that the individual can cope with the demands of their problems without such intensive individual counseling.

During individual therapy, a specialized treatment plan is derived based on the individual needs of the patient. The therapist will help the addict to understand their addiction and their problems. Although individual therapy is guided, the overall idea is for the addict to learn how to work through their problems and come to a reasonable solution on their own without resorting to drugs or alcohol so the counselor will not ā€œtellā€ you what to do but rather will guide the addict in the process of figuring out a solution to the problem and understanding where they made mistakes in the past.

Fitness Therapy at Rehab Centers

Most rehab centers provide some type of fitness programs to help the addict rehabilitate from drug and alcohol addiction and begin to ā€œfeelā€ better. Fitness therapy sessions may include yoga, meditation, or other activities that a physically enriching for the addict. Many rehab centers provide personal trainers that work with the patients during fitness activities. Some of the most common activities that are offered during fitness therapy at rehab centers include circuit training, aerobics, water activities or swimming, kickboxing, sculpting and individualized training sessions.

Group Therapy at Rehab Centers

The purpose of group therapy is to provide the addict with a place to meet and share with others about their trials and triumphs throughout their drug addiction and their recovery process. During group counseling patients are encouraged to share with the group any stories they have about themselves, their addiction and their recovery. In order to get the most out of group therapy all patients are advised to actively take part in the group sessions and to try to come out of each session with something positive to reflect on.

Group therapy provides a safe environment for patients to establish trust in the other group members and to work through treatment together. All group members must commit to the group and keep the information that is shared during group therapy confidential so that each member feels open to speak freely and personally about their addiction and recovery efforts. Most rehab centers consider group therapy the most beneficial type of therapy provided during the entire treatment process.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy at Rehab Centers

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a type of therapy which focuses on solving problems that involve dysfunctional emotions or behaviors with a goal oriented approach. The idea is to change the behaviors that are associated with a particular emotion or condition. This type of therapy offered at rehab centers is usually a therapeutic approach that results in major behavioral changes over time. The therapy is problem focused and is structured individually toward each patient so that strategies can be developed to manage problems and guide the patient toward a better life.
