Can you Force Someone into Rehab?

Yes, you can force someone to go to rehab. Although this is not the preferable way to do it, it is possible to make someone check into a rehab center. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, rehab does not have to be a voluntary choice to work. It is however, considerably more difficult when someone is forced into rehab. Most of the time it is better for them to have their own reasons for going, but this is not always true. Outside reasons can work just as well. The ways to force someone into rehab are never very pleasant.

State Enforced Laws

Some states have laws on record that can force a person who is in danger with drug addiction into rehab. It is difficult but it is possible. The situation has to be dyer and usually the person has to be a danger to themselves or others. Usually it takes a doctor, law enforcement officer, relatives, or multiple friends in order to do it.

Usually the confinement only lasts around 72 hours, if your loved one is not necessarily a danger or is good at manipulation. Many people try this and fail because the addict is good at talking their way out of situations like this.

Interventions

Force Someone into Rehab

When done properly, an intervention can be effective at getting an addict into rehab.

Since a variety of reality television programs became popular, interventions also became popular. Many people think that getting friends and family together to talk to the person is the best way to force them into a rehab center. Sometimes this technique works and others it does not. Most people who think about interventions see them as a way to gang up on their loved one.

Sometimes this works and other times it does more harm than good. An intervention has to be done properly for it to work. Most people hire someone to act as an intermediary in order to keep things civil. Interventions can work, but they have to be done properly.

Talking to Them

There are ways to convince someone to go to rehab just by talking to them. Sometimes all it takes is a solid conversation. Other times you have to threaten or cajole the person to go to rehab. One of the more popular ways to get someone to go to rehab is to cut off the money you give them unless they go to rehab. If you pay their bills or loan them money on a regular basis, tell them you won’t anymore unless they are in treatment.

Another way to talk to someone about going to rehab is to have several friends and family members talk to them separately. Sometimes when several people mention the same problem and offer to help them find treatment, the message gets through better than any threat would. Most people realize that they need help when multiple people mention it.

Regardless of how you plan to proceed, you need a plan. The first step in that plan should be finding a suitable rehab center to suggest. You can find one by calling 888-646-0635Who Answers?. We can help you find just what you need.
